Background

The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum Trust is seeking to appoint a part time Learning and Engagement Officer.

The long-established, accredited museum is located within the walls of Caernarfon Castle and is recognised as one of the leading regimental museums within the UK. The Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is managed by Cadw, with whom we have a close working relationship.

This is a unique opportunity to work in an area of outstanding beauty within the Eryri/Snowdonia National Park based within historic Caernarfon Castle. The town is a beautiful place to live and work and has excellent road and bus facilities and rail links from Bangor to Chester, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London.

We are looking for an applicant who can demonstrate broad skills in Museum and Heritage Learning and Engagement. Experienced in community engagement combined with the use of social media and technology, to interact with a wide spectrum of audiences.

The ideal candidate should be outgoing, comfortable with public engagement, and looking to build on a well-established resilience project to deliver a vibrant, dynamic, self-sustaining Learning programme into the future.

The museum has forged close links with other key organisations, most notably Cadw, that cares for and manages Caernarfon Castle. We also have strong historical links with Wrexham County Borough Council via their Museum and Archives Service. Through a long-term loan agreement, they manage our Reserve Collection & Archives on our behalf at their purpose-built Wrexham site.

The Regimental Museum is managed by a charitable trust and trustees now wish to make an appointment of a new Learning and Engagement Officer.The appointment will be made in accordance with procedures set out by the Regimental Museum’s Management Committee and will be offered on a part time basis of 20 hours per week with a 3 year fixed contract.

Salary; £15,625 per annum pro rata.

Job description

Develop the formal and informal learning programme

  • Develop and deliver STEM learning within secondary school year groups
  • Manage the development of the museum’s Lifelong learning resources
  • Devise and develop special projects for target audiences

Social media

  • Create and manage social media campaigns across all platforms to support learning and engagement programmes

Delivering the public engagement programme

  • Manage and deliver the learning programme
  • Manage external learning specialists
  • Manage the engagement evaluation process and reporting

Managing the stakeholder input

  • Identify opportunities and work in partnership to develop community engagement
  • Manage community stakeholder input
  • Collaborate with cultural organisations in North Wales to deliver partnerships

Funding

  • Support with grants and funding applications
  • Manage Learning Budget

Requirements

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Fluent Welsh speaker
  • Experience of working with young people and groups
  • UK current driving license

Desirable

  • PGCE qualified
  • Experience of working in a heritage site, museum or similar cultural environments
  • Experience of designing and delivering learning programmes that meet the identified needs of a target audience, such as Families, Schools, Veterans people facing discrimination or social exclusion.
  • Experience of collaborating and co-producing learning initiatives with partner organisations and targeted groups to produce new, innovative learning initiatives.
  • Creative flair in developing successful public engagement programmes and interpretation interventions, developed with robust monitoring and evaluation strands Applicants must be prepared to seek out and drive new engagement opportunities for the Museum.

Personal Qualities

We require a highly motivated and goals-orientated Learning and Engagement Officer. Applicants should have proven skills in organisation, communication with excellent personal qualities of energy, enthusiasm, commitment, practicality and adaptability.

Flair, enthusiasm, dedication to the principles of good public service, and a clear understanding of the purpose of a museum. Willingness to work with a variety of individuals and organisations. Excellent communications skills.

Principal Employment Conditions

The post holder is principally responsible to the RWF Museum Director.

The post is offered at the salary stated for a 20-hour week. Overtime is not payable but a time off in lieu scheme will apply to hours worked above the weekly minimum.

Agreed travel and subsistence costs will be reimbursed for all necessary travel, which normally would be agreed in advance with the RWF Museum Director.

A probation period of 6 months applies to this post.

Annual leave entitlement after any probationary period will be 20 days plus a further 8 Bank Holidays. The annual leave entitlement will rise to 25 days after 5 years’ service.

The post is based in the RWF Museum at Caernarfon. This will be the place of work when not engaged with off-site delivery of learning and engagement. Some weekend and evening work will be required, and the post holder must confirm a willingness to use their own car in connection with the business of the museum.
