“The Very Thing” – The Memoirs of Drummer Richard Bentinck,
Royal Welch Fusiliers 1807-1823 By Jonathon Crook

With a foreward by Donald E Graves

Published by Frontline Books, LondonRichard Bentinck of the 23rd Regiment (Royal Welch Fusiliers) served for sixteen years and took part in campaigns from Copenhagen to the West Indies, including the Peninsular War and culminating at Waterloo. In 1823 he was discharged from the army with “ill health” but still survived to a fine old age, dying in 1878.

As an old man he was interviewed for a series of newspaper articles about his service, and he also dictated his recollections of a long life. This volume is based on both resources and is the work of Bentinck’s great-great-great-nephew, himself a recently retired army officer. It contains the vivid and compelling first-hand accounts of an enlisted man who endured great privations and injuries during the course of his service. A fine addition to original accounts of the Napoleonic era.

194 pages including maps and photographs.

Price £ 19.99 + £4.00 UK postage and packing (other destinations at cost)

“Incidents in the Life of an Old Fusilier” - The Recollections of Sergeant Richard Roberts of the 23rd Foot.
Edited by Jonathon Crook

Published by Ken Trotman PublishingSergeant Richard Roberts was transferred from the 2nd Battalion of the 23rd Regiment into the 1st Battalion in 1806, in time to serve in the Copenhagen Expedition the following Year. He then took part in the West Indian and Peninsular campaigns.

Richard Roberts’ reminiscences were originally published in 1862 in a periodical, and Jonathan Crook was made aware of them during his research for “The Memoirs of Drummer Bentinck”. Although not as lengthy as Bentinck’s, Roberts’ memoir makes a fine companion piece, presenting as it does, an honest and accurate account of a very determined enlisted man’s service.

Paperback; 18 pages including copious notes.

“The Road to Armageddon” – The life and Letters of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Cadogan RWF (1868-1914)  Edited by Colonel Henry Cadogan RWF

Henry (Hal) Cadogan was the personification of an infantry officer of the late nineteenth century. Commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers in 1888 he was trained for the imperial wars of the closing years of Queen Victoria ’s reign and saw action on the North-West Frontier and in China . He came from a large family with whom he regularly corresponded and these letters form the basis of this history, illustrating the life of a young officer, far from home, defending an empire of which he was immensely proud. Eventually he rose to command 1st Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers during the Edwardian years and played a part in many ceremonial and social events whilst the army underwent wholesale changes to prepare it for warfare in the 20th century.

When Europe was plunged into war in August 1914 Hal Cadogan brought his battalion back from garrison duty in Malta and endeavoured to prepare it for the conflict. After a short period of training, his battalion was posted to Belgium with the 7th Division. Although the BEF was regarded as the best-trained force to ever sail from Britain , it was ill-prepared for what awaited it. Fighting the last of the Victorian-style campaigns of movement, it acquitted itself with great distinction against an enemy whose sheer weight of numbers seemed to guarantee victory. Despite this, the BEF managed to halt the German Army long enough to deny it victory in 1914, but for Hal Cadogan and the men under his command the price was high, as the battalion was effectively wiped out.

This fine volume, published on November 11th 2009 , has 280 pages and is profusely illustrated. It also contains a nominal roll of 1st Battalion.

Price £20.00 + £4.00 UK postage and packing (other destinations at cost)

The Life & Campaigns of General Hughie Stockwell
Jonathon Riley
Pen & Sword Books, 2006. 320 pages Hardback.

General Sir Hugh Charles (Hughie) Stockwell, arguably the most successful and experienced commander of his generation, began his army career with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His abilities were recognized by meteoric promotion during the Second World War. He was Commandant of the Special Training Centre at Lochailort in 1941 and went on to command a battalion during the Madagascar invasion of 1942, and in Burma, 29 Brigade and later 82nd (West African) Division.

Post war he commanded 6th Airborne Division and by 1956 he was Commander of 1st British Corps in Germany. He then took command of the Anglo-French land forces at Suez. His reputation deservedly survived his involvement in this debacle and he rose to become Adjutant General and Deputy SACEUR. A splendid and long-overdue biography.
